The long-term goal of our research activity is quite “visionary”: we aim at developing a theoretical and practical framework to support physicians in the practical and effective application of clinical guidelines in the diagnostic and therapeutic treatment of real patients. Such a challenging goal can only be achieved by properly taking into account and integrating the different knowledge sources involved in clinical decision-making, i.e., (i) the recommendations in the guidelines, (ii) the clinical data of the patient at hand, and (ii) the basic medical knowledge (intended as the general knowledge that physicians acquire both during their studies and in their daily practice). Indeed, the achievement of such a framework would lead to a “qualitative” forward step of the status-of-the-art, leading to a “second generation” of clinical guideline support systems. |
